When William first
asked me to contribute to this blog, I was so excited! My passion &
obsession with New Zealand wine is undeniable, and I was looking forward to
having somewhere to share & discuss it more. Although I have never been a
blogger, I am hoping this will be a fun opportunity & allow me to share my love
for NZ wine, people & culture. I even recently visited New Zealand
(and am already planning to go back in a few months), as my love for the
country has grown exponentially over the last few years & I couldn't take
it anymore...I just had to go!
For my first post, I
wanted to share my wine of choice for any season, any day of the week. The
first bottle I want to introduce you to is Nobilo Regional Collection Sauvignon
Blanc (http://nobilo.co.nz/). While I am a big wine
drinker, you will notice NZ Sauv Blanc is my absolute favorite, & I will
choose it most frequently simply because I know it delivers on flavor, and is
crisp, clean & easy to drink. I've even gotten my Mom hooked on it, and
she's adamant about not being a white wine drinker!
Nobilo has a
beautiful, elegant label, offering just a hint of the lovely wine you will
experience when you open it (although I always say not to judge a wine on the
label!). This bottle also has a screw top. DO NOT be alarmed! I know many people
(Americans especially) have the impression that screw tops=bad wine. This is
NOT the case. In fact, the cork industry admits 2.5% of cork in the world is
tainted (although wineries believe this number is as high as 15%), which wastes
a LOT of wine. New Zealand has almost exclusively moved to screw tops, a move I
fully support as it is environmentally friendly, and most importantly, saves
product. Although corks are necessary for wines that will be laid down to age
for 10+ years, screw tops are a great alternative as statistics show 80% of
wine purchased in the USA is consumed within 48 hours of purchase, and 98% is
consumed within six months. Something to keep in mind the next time you shy
away from buying a bottle of wine simply because it is a screw top.
One of the best things
about Nobilo Regional Collection is that it is so reasonable. You can often
times find it on sale for $9.99 a bottle. I take advantage of what many grocery
stores offer now with an additional 10% off when you buy 6 bottles or more, and
I will buy 6 (or 12) bottles for $9 each and stock up. You will ALWAYS see at
least a case of Nobilo at my house.
A few facts about Nobilo Regional Collection:
- -Vibrant notes of citrus & tropical fruit with
hints of florals & herbs, this is an incredibly well balanced wine,
perfect to accompany a wide variety of meals
- -It received 89 points from Wine Spectator…not too
shabby for a bottle under $10!
- -Currently selling the 2011 vintage, but I’ve been
drinking this wine for years and it is incredibly reliable, no matter what
year it is
- -14.0% Alcohol
So, I’d like to know, have you tried Nobilo Regional Collection?
What are your thoughts?
Stay tuned for more Nobilo reviews including a comparison of
their Icon Sauv Blanc soon!
-A fun feature on the
Nobilo website is their Food Match section
which highlights recipes they think pair well with their wines.
-Head Winemaker: Dave
Edmonds. He was born in New Zealand, trained in New Zealand, took a short jaunt
in California for a few vintages, but returned to New Zealand & is in his
10th year with Nobilo. His passion is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
-Nobilo has a Tasting Room in
both Auckland and Marlborough, making it easily accessible to visit if you're
ever in New Zealand, and I recommend it!
