Maude is a family-owned winery, created by experienced winemaking couple Sarah-Kate and Dan Dineen. They produce hand crafted wines from their custom built winery amidst the back drop of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, New Zealand. The family estate vineyard, Mt Maude, was planted in 1994 on the steep north facing slopes of the sheltered Maungawera Valley just outside of Wanaka, Central Otago. Sarah-Kate and Dans ultimate goal is to make first class Pinot Noir and they don't underestimate the monumental nature of this task.
Tasting Notes.
Color: Candy red.
Nose: earthy, cherry
Flavor: Interesting cherry, herbal, coating on tongue, bright edges, medium finish. A little rough.

Different from the Marlborough Pinot's I've been drinking. It was a good match with sliced roast turkey, which emphasized the cherry flavor. Not a good match to grilled rib-eye. On day one this wine would be perfect for herb rubbed roast chicken.

What a difference a day makes. Loved this wine on day two. Smooth, cherry, violets, smoke, well integrated, a pleasure to drink with grilled lamb, grilled corn on the cob, and fresh from the market peaches, Rainier cherries and plums. Thoroughly enjoyable with dinner. My advice is to decant for at least 2 hours or do what I did, open, have a glass then close and enjoy the next day. Recommended.

This is not the current vintage of Maude Pinot Noir. The current vintage is 2009. It would be interesting to compare both vintages. The 2008 Maude was bottled three years ago and still has at least two years of enjoyment left for the vintage. I can tell that Sarah-Kate and Dan know what they are doing. Looking forward to future bottles of Maude.
